Islamic Intolerance Towards Catholics in Indonesia

Note: The story below from Catholic World News shows how even in so-called "moderate" Muslim countries, there is no tolerance towards Christianity. Indonesia's constitution, unlike even more hostile Islamic regimes in Saudi Arabia, for example, guarantees freedom of religion. But when the law is violated, the state looks the other way. Meanwhile, all over the US and Europe, Mosques are being built often with financial assistance both from the state and christian religious authorities. Is this what the Pope is talking about when he seeks reciprocity from Muslims in his talks. What gives?

Islamic pressure closing churches in Indonesia

Jakarta, Dec. 20, 2007 (CWNews.com) - The Indonesian Catholic bishops have called public attention to rising Islamic pressure against Christian churches, Vatican Radio reports.

Bishop Martinus Situmorang of Padang, the president of the country's episcopal conference, is the co-author of a new report on the campaign by Muslim activists to close down Christian churches. The report shows that from 2004 through 2007, 108 churches have been closed because of Islamic pressure.

The report notes that Indonesia's constitution guarantees freedom of religion, and challenged the government to honor that promise, protecting the Christian minority from Muslim extremists.

Catholics constitute just 3% of the population in Indonesia. About 85% of the country's 220 million people are Muslims, giving Indonesia the world's largest Muslim population.

Intolerance? I'm shocked 'bout your letter.I am an indonesian.

My comments probably wrong in grammar. So feel free to ask more.

You must understand about religions live in Indonesia. There're 5 religions that accomodated by nation. Islam, Catholic&Protestan(Christian), Buddha, Hindu and Konghucu.

Why churhes downed by Moslems in Indonesia as? Are Moslems going to radical?
Reason :
1. Islam,Hindu, Buddha and Konghucu for a long time invited CHRISTIAN to sit down and resolve major problems in Indonesia. All religions beside CHRISTIAN wanted "no more religion campaign for whom has a religion" Catholic and Protestan said,"NO WE CAN'T" pointed their Bible. Maybe you must SEE and WATCH, how CHRISTIAN sell their FAITH. They use CHILD and POORness to get new MEMBER. OUR CHILDREN PROMISED A CANDY AND THE POORER PROMISED BY FOOD. No SYMPATIC. DID JESUS TEACH THIS? These aren't happen in Moslems, but Buddha and Hindu.

2.THERE ARE TOO MANY CHRISTIAN WAVE. ONE district many CHURCHES. CATHOLIC, PROTESTAN, PANTEKOSTA, JAVANESE CHRISTIAN etc. LITTLE follower but too MANY CHURCHES.

3.POSO AND AMBON, are examples how CHRISTIAN PLAY A "TWO FACE"

It is a bit difficult to understand your comment due to language. However, I would make a few comments.

1. Indonesia is considered "moderate" as a Muslim country for some of the reasons you state. It allows other religions to establish and practice there.

2. It is somewhat alarming when churches are forced to close whatever the reason because it looks like a move away from tolerance.

3. You may be misunderstanding basic Christian teaching on evangelization that orders us to "preach the Gospel to all nations" as opposed to proselytizing, which is to gain converts from other religions by false means such as trickery or bribe. That is strictly forbidden. We are also called to feed the hungry, cloth the naked, shelter the homeless. Mother Teresa of Calcutta is the best example of how a Catholic can do that without deceit or forced conversion as she worked tirelessly among a Hindu nation never once requiring conversion to be fed. I call on Muslims to work alongside Catholics in that regard.

4. I am Catholic and only speak on Catholic matters. Other Christian churches profess other doctrines that are not under the control of the Pope or Catholic Church. It may appear to you that there is a proliferation of Christian churches in an area beyond what is needed because these different churches all want to be established there. I don't like it any more than you do but freedom requires that it be allowed.

5. The best way for any religion to flourish is through free expression and choice of the people. If force or trickery are required to gain or retain members, then that religion is not from God.
